Do You Believe In God

And without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek him. -Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)

By faith:

  • Noah believed God, and he and his family survived the worldwide flood
  • Abraham obeyed God and received an inheritance that lives on today
  • Sarah trusted God to be faithful to His promise to give her a child
  • Moses survived the slaughter of infant males because his parents hid him until the Pharoah’s daughter found him
  • Moses led the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt across the Red Sea on dry ground
  • The walls of Jericho fell by a great shout
  • Rahab, the prostitute, did not die with the others because she hid the spies from their enemies
  • Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jeptha, David, Samuel, and numerous others conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, became strong, became mighty, put foreign armies to flight
  • The dead were made alive
  • Some were martyred, mocked, flogged, chained, imprisoned, stoned, sawn in two, tortured, afflicted, mistreated

Read Hebrews 11:1-38.

Hebrews is called the faith chapter for an excellent reason. It is an overview of faithful men and women whose stories are contained in the pages of the Bible. These men and women believed that God is Who He says He is. When Moses was commissioned to go back to Egypt to bring the Israelites out of bondage, Moses asked God, “Who shall I say has sent me.” And God answered, “Tell them that I Am has sent you.”

No other explanation was needed. I Am encompasses all the characteristics of God.

Do You Believe In God Through Faith?

Belief in God is more than acknowledging Him intellectually. God is not Someone we can touch, or see, or hear audibly (although a few have heard Him speak). To know God, we must have faith, and that faith is not something we muster up on our own. God gives us the faith to believe in Him.

Wait? So, God is, but we can’t know Him unless we have faith, and we can’t have faith unless God gives it to us.

Correct. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that faith is a gift from God. And that no one can obtain it on their own accord because if we could, we would become prideful in our ability to have faith. Faith is given to us by God and by the measures He has allowed each of us (Romans 12:3).

Faith can be increased. We can ask for it (Luke 11:9-12). The apostles did (Luke 17:5), a father with a possessed son did (Mark 9:24), and Jesus prayed for Peter’s faith to be strengthened (Luke 22:32). And difficult circumstances can increase our faith (James 1:2).

Do You Believe In God’s Provision?

You may acknowledge there is God, but that’s not enough. Even the demons “believe” in God (James 1:19). There are two aspects of faith:

  1. intellectual agreement
  2. trust

We must believe Jesus is Who He says He is and put our trust in His work on the cross.

  • He is the incarnate God
  • Who’s death on the cross was payment for our sins
  • He was resurrected on the third day
  • and He sits at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us who have put our trust in Him

Have you put your trust in Him? Have you made Him the Lord of your heart? God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in their spirit (John 4:24). If you have not trusted God’s provision for your salvation, you cannot truly know God because your spirit is not alive yet.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing through the Word of Christ. -Romans 10:17
