Trust In The Lord

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. -Proverbs 3:5

Can’t Trust Anyone These Days

I make a phone call. There’s no answer. “The person you are calling is not available; please leave a message after the beep,” the mechanical voice of the answering machine requests.

“Click”

I never leave a message. Well, seldom. Why? Because they will NEVER call me back. Whether I’m calling a repairman, asking a question about an order I’ve placed, trying to get a hold of people I’m trying to hire, no one calls back. Or at least I don’t trust that they will.

I have often been placed in a precarious situation because someone didn’t return a call or didn’t do what they promised they would do after I had talked to them.

If I ask you to do something, I will probably remind you to make sure we don’t get our wires crossed. I mean, don’t get me wrong, we both can’t be trusted. There have been times that I have dropped the ball by not returning a call or fulfilling an obligation. Not many times, but nobody is perfect, and some of us are more forgetful than the rest of us. So, I will never put all my trust in humankind–we’re too unstable.

Trust In The Lord

However, God is not unstable. God set the universe into orbit and has maintained it since the beginning of time. He is steadfast, faithful, and never changing.

He has made covenants and has never broken them.

  • The rainbow is His ever-present promise that the world will never be destroyed by water again -Genesis 9:11-17.
  • God’s promise to make Abraham’s seed a great nation -Genesis 15:5, 18-21.
  • Israel was to be God’s treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation -Exodus 19:5-6.
  • God’s promise to David that the Messiah would come from his lineage through Abraham. -Genesis 35:11; Psalm 72:17
  • The New Covenant made by Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection -1 Corinthians 11:25

He has made promises and continues to keep them.

  • “All have come to pass for you; not one of them have failed.” -Joshua 23:14
  • “And this is the promise that He made to us — eternal life.” -1 John 2:25
  • “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.” -Ezekiel 36:26
  • “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. -Psalm 32:8

Trust In The Lord And He Will Give You The Desires Of Your Heart

Have you trusted the Lord in a situation concerning your life and feel like He hasn’t been faithful? Have you asked Him for something that hasn’t come to fruition? Does that make God untrustworthy? No.

The Bible tells us to delight ourselves in the Lord, and He will give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4). So, the first thing I would ask is, do you delight in the Lord? Do you find your happy place in spending time reading His Word? Do you desire to sit in silent solitude and whisper prayers towards heaven? Or climb into a prayer closet to discover what the Lord’s plans are for your life?

Sometimes when we read verses like Psalm 37:4, we are drawn towards the “and He will give you” part, but we fail to acknowledge the “if you will” part.

If we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts. -Psalm 37:4

But wait; there’s more!

Then the psalmist encourages us by saying,

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. – Psalm 37:5-6

I recently heard an interview given by Dallas Jenkins, the director of the Biblical series “The Chosen,” and he said, “Jesus makes us what we are not.” Think about that. God intends to make us into something that we cannot change ourselves to be. He does not want to change us to be like someone else. We all have our unique personalities, but He wants to make us a better version of ourselves–to form us into the image of Christ. Not to be Christ, but to walk with the Spirit of Christ Who lives in us. Us but better!

So, when we walk in the Spirit of Christ, the desires of our hearts become His desires. He will give us the desires of our hearts because we will align with His will.

Trust In The Lord With All Your Heart

  • Trust His Word is true. Every jot and every tittle is true.
  • Actively read and meditate on His Word to understand His ways.
  • Have open communication with our Father through meaningful prayer time.
  • Decide each day that our trust will be in Him. The more we trust Him, the easier it will be because He is trustworthy. He will prove Himself faithful to you.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God Who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations. -Deuteronomy 7:9
