God Is Good All The Time

God is good! All the time! This phrase was popular a few years back as a greeting between believers. If anyone would say, “God is good,” you would answer with “all the time”!

To be honest, I still do. How can you not?

God is good all the time!

God is good all the time

God is good, and He is continually doing good. He invites us to experience His goodness without reservation. And what joy we find when we do!

  • God is good. You are good and do good; teach me your statutes. Psalm 119:68
  • He invites us to experience His goodness. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Psalm 34:8
  • His goodness endures throughout all generations. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:5

Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 106:1

What Does it Mean that God is Good?

What do you think of when we say that God is good?

We call many things good: that was a good game, this is a good day, they have a good attitude. So what does it mean that God is good?

When we think of someone being good, we often think it’s the opposite of being evil. Is God the opposite of evil? Does His goodness depend on the fact that He’s not evil?

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. Psalm 5:4

The truth is that God cannot be compared to anything or anyone. His Word tells us that He is high above everything and that nothing is comparable to Him. He is holy, set apart from everything else.

He is the Creator and cannot be compared to the creation.

God contains all goodness in His being. He is not merely absent from evil, but His goodness is steadfast, patient, overflowing, generous, merciful, and patient.

So, what makes God so good? Nothing. God is not made good. Nor does He act good. But He is the source of good. Everything He does and says is good. Genesis 1 records creation as God was creating it. After each flora and fauna, each light source, every living creature, and at the end of each new day, God looked upon the things He created and proclaimed, “It is good!”

God’s goodness is better than the proclamation of something being good. He is the very essence of good itself. God does not DO good; He IS good.

God’s goodness is shown in the care of His creation, and His kindness is shown to unbelievers. God also showers blessings on His children.

He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of God. -Psalm 33:5 (KJV)

There are so many verses that tell us of the goodness of God.

Zechariah 9:17 exclaims, “How great is his goodness and his beauty!

Romans 2:4 tells us that God’s goodness is meant to lead unbelievers to repentance.

And Psalm 31:19 rejoices in the goodness that God has stored up for those who trust in Him.

God’s Goodness is Shown in Creation

Have you looked outside today? I mean, really looked. You may have had to go out, but did you get too busy with your activities and miss the goodness of God?

There are so many ways that God shows His goodness in His creation. The list is endless, but as I write this, I can look out my window and see God’s creation: the wind blowing a cool breeze across the treetops of this hot summer day. I see the sunlight bounce off the glassy dew that still lingers on the grass, a red cardinal perched on our white fence, butterflies in the bushes, a hummingbird darting from flower to flower, and two clueless cats stretched out, sleeping in the porch’s cool shade.

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord…Psalm 33:5 (KJV)

God is good all the time

The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. Psalm 145:9

Jesus told us to look at the birds and see how God loves to take care of them, yet He loves us even more! (Matthew 6:26)

Job 38:41 tells us that God takes care of the ravens, and Psalm 104 tells us that He takes care of the creatures in the sea–even Nessie! 🙂

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it. These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. Psalm 104:24-28

God’s Goodness is Shown to Unbelievers

His general goodness, often called common grace, is shown to all people, even His enemies. Those who ignore His call, or are too busy to heed His warning, or those who outright hate Him are still privileged to experience God’s goodness.

He still lavishes goodness on them.

They get to enjoy the institute of marriage, which God set up. They enjoy the benefit of a body that heals itself, created by God. They enjoy the fruits of their labors, their children enjoy the benefits of family, and communities benefit from the laws of man given to us by the Lord. The unsaved still can find happiness, peacefulness, and rest.

For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Matthew 5:45

Asaph, the author of Psalm 73, expresses his confusion about the Lord’s goodness towards those who don’t serve God.

He writes in verse 3, “For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.”

Then he goes on to list the way the “wicked” prosper in verses 5-12:

  • they have no problems
  • they eat well
  • they are full of pride
  • they are enjoying themselves
  • they curse God without repercussions
  • they are always at ease
  • and increase in riches

However, after a few verses of self-pity, he comes to the truth of the matter in verses 16-17.

But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Psalm 73:16-17

Asaph realized the truth is that God’s goodness towards the unbelievers is only for this lifetime. Beyond eternity, they will not experience His goodness but His judgment.

But God is not willing that any should perish, but all should come to the saving knowledge of His love. (2 Peter 3:9)

His goodness to unbelievers is another attempt to bring the sinner to repentance.

Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? Romans 2:4
