10 Characteristics of a Godly Woman In the Bible

Women were created in God’s image for a specific cause. God’s Word reminds us of this daily through specific verses and stories about powerful women and the godly roles they played throughout history, like Mary, Rachel, Rebecca, and Ruth. These spiritual leaders, mothers, and faith-filled forces served as spiritual mentors. This serves as a road map to our spiritual growth.

How Does God Define A Godly Woman

God’s definition of a godly woman is the same as for a godly man.

Godliness is being committed to the things of God by taking on His characteristics, reflecting His love and compassion, and desiring His will above all.

The goal of the devil is to look for every opportunity to lure every woman of God out of balance. Have you ever asked yourself the questions below?

Do you know that the only channel God sought by which restoration of humankind could be possible was the womb of a woman.? Genesis 3:15

Have you ever asked yourself why the devil tempted the woman Eve? Genesis 3

Why the angel sought for Mary, the mother of Jesus and Elizabeth? Luke 1:26-38

What of the scenario that happened in Revelation 12? Why did the dragon stand in front of the woman about to give birth to devour her child?

The revelation from all these questions reveals the importance of women in the plans of God, and that is why the devil explores every means to devour her.

10 Characteristics of a Godly Woman

To be a godly woman, you must be a woman of faith. You must have accepted the gift of salvation that our Heavenly Father offers freely to everyone. And as you study the Word and walk with the Lord, you will begin to develop some extraordinary characteristics of a godly woman.

The virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31 stands as an excellent example for all god-fearing women who desire to be wives. The heart of her husband trusts in her good deeds, a testament to her attributes as a godly woman. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue as she cares for her family.

And she embodies an excellent example of strength and wisdom, reflecting the imperishable beauty that originates from a woman who fears the Lord. She is also portrayed as a wise woman who excels in all the different roles she plays in life.

Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:31 (ESV)

So, here are ten characteristics of a godly woman that are described throughout the Bible.

group of women and the title, 10 Characteristics of a godly woman

1. A Godly Woman Loves

Isn’t it impossible to love as Christ loved us? Our own frail and flawed love will never be able to meet such lofty goals.

On the other hand, God never intended for us to rely on our own finite capacity for love. Because His love flows through us, He calls us to love as He does.

“For the love of Christ dominates us,” Paul explained it (2 Corinthians 5:14). Full submission to God (dying to ourselves and living in Christ) allows us to be filled with Christ’s Love, which governs our thoughts and deeds.

For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. Corinthians 5:14 (NIV)

When Christ’s Love flows in and through us, we are compelled to love our spouse the way God intended. To submit, be patient, gentle, and not irritated or resentful.

We can only be controlled by Christ’s love if we allow it.

2. A Godly Woman Hungers

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, God. Psalm 42:1 (NASB)

This is a very important point for every woman. One of the things that makes you different is your consistent hunger for God; the depth of our hunger for Him determines how far we can go with Him.

This is proof that we are still in Him. It is the hunger in our soul that He fills up. You can’t settle with your past revelation of Him. For it is always new. When we are hungry for God’s presence, He shows up, and when God shows up as we behold Him, we are changing, and we become like Him

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 3:18

3. A Godly Woman Fears the Lord

Proverbs 31:30 says…

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Psalm 31:30

This is an act of worship. It is an act of submission. A woman of God, rather than focusing on outward beauty or appealing to other people, a godly woman focuses on God first.

4. A Godly Woman Understands

A Godly woman is a woman that understands the sacrifice of Love

Love sacrifice is necessary and a part of what makes anyone great before God. The only language the Spirit understands is sacrifices. That is why the greatest requirement that the Divine Justice requested for man’s redemption is for Jesus Christ to die for us.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

And the only sacrifices that are expected of us after Jesus paid it all is found in Apostle Paul’s letter.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 12:1 (KJV)

5. A Godly Woman Remains

The Apostle Peter encouraged Christian women to remain a witness for God in their marriage.

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives. 1 Peter 3:1

Another characteristic of a godly woman is to remain a witness in her home. While it is ideal for both spouses to be Christians, a woman who has married a non-Christian should remain faithful and allow her life to be a witness for God. This may lead to her husband developing a personal relationship with God.

6. A Godly Woman Supports

A godly woman always supports other believers.

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

A godly Christian woman makes a positive difference in the lives of others around her.

If she is married, she improves and enriches the lives of her husband and children. If she is unmarried, she deepens her relationships at home, church, and/or work. She leaves the world in a better state than she found it!

Others trust her because she has proven to be trustworthy and reliable, and they know they can count on her to help them.

A godly woman is not selfish, and she seeks to help others with their burdens by prayer, helping them financially, and giving advice from the Word of God. As the Spirit leads her.

7. A Godly Woman Believes

A godly woman believes Christ Jesus can do anything. Many times we are faced with trials. A woman of God is always stable because she is always conscious of the Word of God. She is not moved by her sight except by what the Word of God says. That is why when we saturate our minds and lives with the Word of God, it becomes a weapon when we are faced with many tests.

8. A Godly Woman Plans Ahead

She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. Proverbs 31:15

One thing that makes this woman distinct is her capacity to plan ahead and complete tasks, which makes her stand out. She doesn’t give in to boredom.

9. A Godly Woman Prays

The Bible commanded us to pray. As a woman, it is needful for us to pray according to the leading of the Spirit.

Prayer is the only channel by which we can be strengthened. Prayer is a channel through which God can travel to your space. In Ezekiel 22:30, God said, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.”

Standing in the gap between our husbands and the people around us can go a very long way.

10. A Godly Woman Has Faith

Faith is the process through which Christians approach God and place their faith in Him for salvation.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.Ephesians 2:8–9

Faith underpins every aspect of the Christian life.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17

As a woman of God, faith life is essential. How does faith come? Faith comes by hearing and reading the Word of God. As we meditate on the Word and as God works in our lives, our faith grows.

She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly… And she vowed a vow and said, ‘O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life. 1 Samuel 1:10-11 (ESV)

9. Titus 2 Women: The characteristics of the Titus 2 women are highlighted in Titus 2:3-5. Their reverence, mentorship, and focus on teaching family virtues are admirable qualities that contribute to the nurturing of godly relationships within the community.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior… They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Titus 2:3-5

10. Sarah: Hebrews 11:11 portrays Sarah’s faith in the promises of God, her endurance, and her ability to trust in God’s timing. Her story reminds us of the importance of patience and faithfulness even in challenging circumstances.
