God Knows Our Ways And Directs Our Paths

For the Lord knows the way of the righteous… -Psalm 1:6

Have you ever walked into a room where you didn’t know anyone who was there? I’ve been there; it’s an awkward feeling. The farther I went inside the room, the more lost and confused I felt. The inability to focus on one thing or one person made me feel like I was entering a giant chasm.

Being unknown is a lonely feeling.

But we are never alone. The Bible tells us that the Lord knows our ways (Psalms 1:6), He leads our paths (Psalm 23:3), and He directs our footsteps (Proverbs 16:9).

We are never alone because God knows us.

The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. Psalm 37:23-24

God Knows Us Better Than We Know Ourselves

God knows us better than we know ourselves because He looks inside the heart without the crazy filters we put on ourselves. The filters that say:

  • I’m a mess
  • I don’t deserve it
  • I’m not good enough

He doesn’t hear these lies that we tell ourselves. He looks at us, and He loves us just the way we are–clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

God Knows Our Thoughts And Desires

God knows our thoughts and desires. Does that make you uncomfortable? There have been many times when I have thought of something and immediately regretted it because I know that God already knows it. I’ve even had a thought and then pretended like I didn’t have it. You know, like when you say something and make a sound or sing a song or hum to cover up what you have said? I’ve tried to do that in my mind–it doesn’t work. So, I confess it and move on. God is so good!

But my love for God makes me want to keep my thoughts pleasing to Him. I desire for Him to search my heart and to see if there be any grievous way in me so we can deal with it (Psalm 139:23-24). Whatever the issue, He wants us to feel safe in confessing it to Him for our deliverance and His glory.

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. Psalm 50:15

God Knows Our Needs Before We Ask

If God knows our needs before we ask, then why do we pray? (Matthew 6:8) Prayer is communication with God, and in participating in prayer, we become more intimate in our relationship with Him. However, that’s not the only function of prayer. Prayer is the avenue by which the Father aligns our will with His. Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer, and most of His effort was keeping aligned with the Father’s will.

For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. John 6:38

We have needs, and the Father knows these needs, but our needs will become more aligned to His when we pray.

Psalm 139:1-4, O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying downand are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
